Pohinahina

This isn't a cactus or succulent, but it is a wonderful Native Hawaiian plant.

I might expand the scope of this blog to document the growth of the non-succulent Hawaiian plants I have (Kalo which have corms, 'Akia, and this Pohinahina).

The Latest Flowers - June 12, 2017

As we move into early summer, the plants have throttled back on putting out flowers and they are starting to focus on putting on growth - but there are still some flowers around -

More Lotus Flower Pictures

When I got home, half the petals had fallen off the flower - but the remaining structure still made for a really cool picture. Pretty 'other worldly' if you ask me... no wonder this is such a mysterious plant!

First Lotus Flower

Yeah this isn't a cactus or succulent, but our lotus plant opened up its first flower! This is one really cool flower (and the leaves are cool too). There are a couple more right behind this one - I'll take close ups of the reproductive parts later this afternoon.

From Around the Garden - April 17, 2017

I noticed a subtle difference in the new Jatropha podagrica leaves emerging from the two more mature plants. The lighter colored leaves are on the oldest plant, the really dark ones are on the younger plant. And here is another picture of the emerging leaves on the Pseudobombax ellipticum. Dual flowers on the Uncarina roeoesliana. The timing of all the previous flowers was one would fully bloom, and the next was getting ready to bloom - but two were never out at the same time. Until just recently. There looks to be no end to the flower production on this plant either - there are new buds still popping out.

Stapeliads Starting to Bloom

The equinox just past and now this... If I had to guess, I'd say it's going to be a really hot summer. Maybe that's why these plants are trying to get their flowering done now.

Euphorbia esculenta Flowering Again

Lots of rain last night and today - and these flowers popped out just like that in response. I used Black Gold Cactus and Succulent Mix when I potted this last year. It offers good drainage, but has more organics when used alone than what I've been using lately - but this plant seems to like it. If it rains anymore though, I'll start to get a little worried. This plant just keeps getting nicer and nicer!!! I've been contemplating making a pot for this plant, but I am not getting an image in my mind... for now it'll stay put.

More Pictures of the Uncarina Flower

The more I look at these flowers, the more intriguing they become! I really like the way the sunlight makes the entrance to the flower look - pretty much like a glowing party room!

My Uncarina in Bloom

This plant is pretty young and it just put out it's first flower (not sure if it flowered before I took ownership, but I think this is the first season it would have been capable of blooming). Yeah - this is the plant I just transplanted and posted about a couple of days ago.
