Ferocactus and Mammillaria Seeds

I prepared a germination and grow out tray for some Ferocactus and Mammillaria seeds.

After only a few days, these guys are popped out and standing proud.

Ant Plant Update

This was the first Hydnophytum I purchased (from Perla at last year's Kunia Orchid Society Plant Show and Sale).  It has definitely grown - in fact I have been looking around to find another container. 

And in looking it over for issues, look what I found!  I have a number of seedlings from this plant, but it is cool to see one growing without any assistance from me.

Having seen a few of these now, I believe these are the seed pods that are actually holding seeds.

We'll find out in the next day or so (when I try to harvest them).

Latest Batch of Seeds from the Portulaca Molokiniensis

I was checking on the plants this morning before leaving for work and behold - the recent pollinating efforts have yielded fruit (seeds)!!!

I'm going to try a different method to germinate these.  I'm going to wait a few days - the last batch I threw in to the container and only one of all those seeds germinated.  There has got to be a better way to get these to grow.

Repotted the Euphorbia flanaganii/esculenta Seedlings

The central heads on these four plants were putting on some girth and height.  I figured it was time to get them in a bigger pot.

I'll post an update on how these are filling in a month or so from now.

More Portulaca Molokiniensis Seeds from the Recent Pollinations

Fruits of Labors of Love!!! 

I already planted these in the container where I am growing out the others.  Hopefully some of these will germinate - of all the seeds I've ever gotten from my ihi plants, I've only gotten the five currently growing to germinate...

Latest Seeds - 09/19/2017

More Portulaca molokiniensis seeds.  I've been pollinating flowers between plants as they come - so now I'm seeing a more steady stream of seeds.

The other seeds are Mammillaria seeds from the new cactus, a Gymnocalycium seed pod and the two Euphorbia I discusses a couple of weeks back.

UPDATE:  I got all but the Euphorbia seeds planted.  I just added the ihi seeds to the container that had the others, and the same for the Gymnocalycium and Mammillaria seeds - just put them in the areas that didn't already have growth from the previous Gymnocalycium planting.

I opened the germinating container for a few hours to let some of the excess moisture out and to check out how the seedlings are doing.

New Gymnocalycium Seedlings

These are seedlings growing from seeds I collected from one of the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii plants I have in the backyard.  Pretty quick response (less than a couple of weeks for germination).

Here is the parent plant.

I know these take a while to grow out - but observing should be fun.

Hydnophytum formicarum Seedling Update July 19, 2017

And since I'm at it with ant plants, here is a picture of the five seedlings I have of the Hydnophytum formicarum.

Seeing as how I'm going to have to separate the middle group sometime in the future, I'll make some horizontally oriented mounts and get those fired up.

Here are some pictures of the ant plant seeds/seedlings in better light.  First are the Myrmecodia beccarii that had just about written off -

And just after 12 hours, these Hydnophytum papuanum seeds are swelling up.  I'll bet that after I get home from work to check on these, they'll have sprouted...

Our Finds at the CSSH July Meeting

These are the plants we came back with from the July CSSH meeting last night.  I'm going to have to work on identifying them, but for now here are the pictures.

Not too much this month - but it's about quality, not quantity!

These are most likely Hydnophytum papuanum seeds (picked just yesterday)

The Monadenium has a label, and the Edithcolea is probaly a Edithcolea grandis (but won't know until it flowers)

This one is likely a golden barrel cactus

Myrmecodia beccarii Seeds

Yesterday I went ahead and pulled the seed pod that was developing on the Myrmecodia beccarii. I got four seeds from the fruit/berry. These were planted in the same manner the five Hydnophytum formicarum seeds were (LFS bedding, plastic matrix pot). I'll post if these germinate - if they are anything like their cousins, these will germinate in just a couple of days (the last Hydnophytum seed had popped out of it's seed case in just 24 hours). Here's the void left by the berry after it was pulled. This is a really weird and unusual plant species -

Repotting the Brighamia insignis Seedlings

The central bundle that was growing looked to be getting to the point where repotting later could be problematic. I decided it is better to separate the bundle now and possibly lose a couple of seedlings, rather than wait and have to untangle a bound up root ball from multiple plants. This is the result a day later - all of the seedlings look to be ok.
