Next Batch Glazed - 9/9/2017

The pieces I turned in a couple of weeks ago for bisque firing were done.  I used Red 25, Turquoise, and Majolica for these.

These five pieces were in the bisque shelf.

The lighter colored glaze is "Sun Valley" and the darker one is "Carbon Trap Shino".  The glaze shelf was really full so these should be done next Saturday afternoon.

Small Batch of Glazing

The kids and I stopped by the ceramics shop this morning to get our last set of stuff glazed up.  The glaze firing racks were pretty empty.  It'll probably be a couple of weeks before these pieces are all done.

Sun Valley Glazed Pots

There was a new glaze when these were ready to glaze - Sun Valley.  Noe and I glazed a few with it - I'm glad we did.  This first one is a U Body Pot -

I'm not sure if the coloring is driven more by the glaze, or by the clay body -

Glazing the Recent Work

Noe and I had some pieces to glaze so we went to the ceramics studio yesterday.

 There were some new glazes - Sun Valley and a Celadon (not Mackenzie like I'm accustomed to).

 

So the glaze firing rack is finally getting filled up - I think we have three batches of work all stacked up. This firing is literally going to be "Christmas In July" when it is time to pick up the work (probably next Saturday).

Noe and I hit the ceramics studio on Tuesday afternoon. I got these glazed in Woo Blue, but someone had noted that the recently finished pieces weren't coming out blue, but brown. There was a piece of tape with "Woo Poo" over the Woo Blue label. Oh well - these should look good in brown also. Noe got four pots glazed. Productive day!

Glazing the First Batch (of 2017)

When we turned in the second and third batch, our first batch pieces were bisqued and ready for glazing. I glazed with Buttery Yellow and Celadon - it'll be interesting to see how it works with the Jamaica clay. Noe used Woo Blue.

Glazed Work 12/17/2016

I was able to pick up a batch fresh out of the kiln this past Saturday. I haven't had a chance to look over the pieces individually yet, but here is the group. When I get a chance, I'll post individual pictures. The Red 25 glaze came out wonderful again. The Turq, not so much (but still nice). The Buttery Yellows also came out superb!!! It literally is like Christmas every time the kiln is emptied!!!

My First Jamaica Clay Body Pieces

All trimmed up and ready for bisque firing. I have enjoyed working with Jamaica clay - it feels smoother than the Rod's Bod and Soldate 60 that I have been using. Thinking about the next steps, I believe I want to use minimal glaze on these pieces, to highlight the clay body. I know I'll have to glaze the interior of the two bowls for food safety, but in all cases, I will minimize what goes on the exterior. And these are the latest batch of pinched pots. I'll take Noe and Marlon in to the ceramics studio today so we can glaze these pieces (they each have one in this batch with the balance being my pots).

Newest Batch of Pots Back from the Kiln

I went to the ceramics studio yesterday after work to drop off some more pots. And what do you know - the latest glaze firing is all finished!!! I had several pieces in this firing and I have to say the reduction was fantastic!!! I am more than pleased with this latest batch. This pot is glazed in "Buttery Yellow" I love how the yellow ran into channels. The other pieces I've seen glazed with Buttery Yellow had a more even finish - I'm going to have to use this glaze more often. This pot was glazed with "Red 25" - I tried to capture the very fine running that occurred - this red doesn't come out this vibrant unless the reduction process is well executed! This pot was dipped "Cranberry" This pot was first dipped in "Albany Black" to coat the bottom, and then the top was dipped in "Carbon Trap Shino". Another dipped in "Cranberry" - this one did get more of the violet (red and blue) to show than the first one. This is perhaps one of the most variable glazes I have used so far. Add just to show that I am making other things besides succulent pots, here is a tea cup I threw on the wheel. The glaze is a base dip of "Tenmoku" with a small dip of "Toshiko Orange" for the runny topping. And the second to the last one (the last one I'm saving for another post) I got from this kiln run is another cup. This one was dipped in "Turq". The other pieces I've seen with this glaze came out brownish-green - not this one!!! Bright turquoise on a gray-green background!
