January 2017 Cactus and Succulent Society of Hawaii Meeting

Tonight's meeting topic was Euphorbia milii (and there were a lot of them). Slide shows a plenty Great meeting!!!

New Mammilaria

I've been looking for this cactus for a few weeks. I had seen some nice specimens over at the the Home Depot in Kapolei, but I passed on them - after changing my mind, they had been snapped up already. I'm pretty sure this is a type of Mammilaria. I've seen some similar ones during my regular nursery browsing, but they didn't have the taller central spines that this one has. I repotted this one and raised the stem above the previous line. Hopefully this plant will fill out the lower section and callous out. I'll keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn't burn along the way.

Latest Flowers - Baby Toes and Cacti

We've been pretty busy getting the kids to their events and doing some other improvements/chores around the house. We got a PV system put up on the roof and I've been switching out bulbs and the kitchen sink faucet to modernize the house and get as efficient as we possibly can. Electricity and fuel are forecasted to increase in price significantly in the next year, so we're preparing now. Anyways, enough of why I haven't been making pots or gardening. On Monday afternoon, I did a lot of catching up (cleaning up and repotting the Thai Pepper plants I'll be raising as bonsai, collecting the plants for the upcoming CSSH plant raffle give away, and potting/rearranging some of the regulars. While doing all that, I noticed these two plants had sent up new flowers.

Always a good thing to stop and smell the proverbial flowers!

Same Plant - But Different???

I was inspecting my crop of Hylocereus seedlings and I noticed this - Most have four radial divisions, a few had three, but one had five. And while I was at it, I was checking on my Selenicereus testudo and on the same individual plant, there were segments with four, five and six radial divisions. It'll be interesting to track these plants as they grow older to see if the trait continues...

Noe's Argyrodermadma

Noe's Argyrodermadma is in bloom. Pretty cool!!!

Marlon's Haworthia

This plant has gotten pretty thick. We took it out of its pot to see if the offshoots are ready to plant. We decided to wait a few more weeks just to be sure.

Nursery Surfing - A Family Waimanalo Farm

Our original plan was to hit Sharon's (for the Heliconias) and Koba's (for the Cannas and the Golf Carts). But being New Year's Eve most of the nurseries were closed. We had made the trip out with La's cousin, and they suggested we visit one of their friend's farm. We did and ended up with some new Heliconia, a couple of taro corms and several tilapia. Talk about hospitality!!! We fried the fish last night for dinner, but not before I made a few gyotaku - I'm going to finish these and get them back to the farmers - one for the house and one for the Farmer's Market stall. Happy New Year!!! These pictures are from La's phone.
